just ordered a new Maxtor diamondmax 9 80 gig hard drive, and while trying to do a full format using Windows 2000's partitioning and formatting tool, the whole computer crashes. It crashes at the 41% mark which is about ~27 gig, so im thinking a bad cluster. I tried to partition it in different sizes and it always crashes at that same area, the 27 gig mark. Any ideas? I got it to run using Windows XP's "Quick Format using NTFS", but it still should be able to do a full format right?
Thanks

The Maxtor program will also diagnose the drive. If it didn't come with the drive, you can download it from their site. It is called MaxBlaster III or something like that.

Are you using the install CD to do this?

Win2K with no service packs applied (or the intall CD without service packs slipstreamed) can't handle drives larger than 64GB properly.
You need to make a slipstreamed version of the CD with SP2 or 3 (I'd recommend SP2)
