Do I have a dead CPU (PIII 800 and Asus CUBX)?

I've been running a PIII 600E on my Asus CUBX (1008 beta bios) for ages. I've just bought a used PIII 800 and can't get it to boot.

Power comes on - no display, no keyboard reponse - nothing (but all the fans and hard drives are spinning but doesn't sound like there's any attempt to load the OS etc).

The CUBX is jumperfree so I'd expect it to detect the 800 with no problems. I have tried switching it to jumper mode, setting the multiplier to x8 but still nothing. I've also tried clearing CMOS (just in case) - no luck.

When the 600E is put back in place, everything is fine.

Anybody have any suggestions what I else I can try before reporting it to the seller as a dud?

The markings on the 800 are:

800/256/100/1.7V
