Do I have a bad MoBo?

I have a brand new build using the ASUS P5E3 Premium X48 wifi @n motherboard and a QX9770 CPU. I have been trying to get memory to work in here at DDR3-1800. So far I have tried two different 2GB kits, the Patriot Viper PC3-15000 and the Kigston HyperX PC314400.

I cannot get either to post at 1800, and when I run at 1600 and then run memtest I always get corruption and it is always on test 7 and the corruption is always the same. If I configure the memory at FSB of 333 and speed of 1066, I can run indefinitely and 19+hrs of prime95 torture test. As soon as I use a FSB speed of 400 even if the speed is still 1066 I will get memtest errors or at higher speeds (1800) no post.

At first I suspected the memory (the patriot stuff) so I ordered the hyperx but I see the same results. I have tried single sticks with the same results. So now I question if I have a bad motherboard. The thing in the back of my mind is that I still question if I just have to get compatible memory, I have found people that are using OCZ, Corsair, and Gskill.

I was also curious what memory and settings were used in the AnandTech review of this motherboard since it is not listed in the review. Is there a way to get that information?

You probably need to experiment with different voltages and timings to get your memory to run at full speed and pass prime 95. Your board should have some manual adjustments. Your results may vary. Some memory will run at the rated timings, some not. I don't use prime 95 very often; just run my system for hours on end while downloading files. If I don't get any error messages or bluescreens, then I leave it alone. And your board is so new that I doubt you have any bios updates to try. The general rule of thumb is to increase the timing numbers to a higher setting for stability.
 
It sounds like the board is changing the timings as you up the FSB. Do you set timings manually or leave them at auto? Do you have some form of air flow around the CPU socket area and the north bridge?
 

I have tried messing with the voltages, but haven't really had much success (change in outcome). I do set everything to manual that I can including all the timings. First thing I did once everything was assembled was go check for the latest bios. There was a new one released on 3/24 (version 0204) which was listed as improving stability with some DDR3 RAM and support new CPUs.

Air flow is great, I have 3 120mm inflow fans (front, 2 side) 2 120mm exhaust fans (back, top) and a 120mm cpu fan that feeds directly towards the rear exhaust.

I have been setting the timings and the voltage for the memory per the specifications 8-8-8-24 and 1.9v. Should I try to loosen that up a bit to 9-9-9-24 and up the voltage to 1.96 or so?
 


A newer bios was released and it really made a huge difference (0401) things are working just fine now. All I had to do was configure and find the stable point I was happy with.
 
Glad to hear it's working fine now. Did it (new BIOS) improve your stable memory OC's? What voltage are you feeding that DDR3?
