I know that Dell, alienware as well as other customizable laptop companies have upgradable video cards. I noticed that a laptop at Circuit City (got a $500 GC from work) had pci express x16 "interface" which could mean it is still integrated...

Are these cards manufacture dependent like Dells?

The one in particular I may get is this one HERE

It would be the cheapest laptop at circuit city that had decent graphics that were not geforce go 6150 or the cheapo Intel integrated 950 stuff.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Even if there is a videocard expansion slot, it will be very difficult, to find a videocard for a laptop on the retail market. Realistically, you have to choose the videocard upgrade when you buy the laptop. Dell for example will allow to configure an upgraded videocard when ordering. You shouldn't count on upgrading it down the line after that.

Video cards in laptops use AGP or PCI-E X16 interfaces but are normally soldered to the system board. Just because the interface name looks familiar doesn't mean there's a physical slot in there and that the card can be removed.

I don't know of any laptop that has upgradeable video now, I know there were about a year ago but I haven't seen any since. If any system does, it's going to be a really high-end system, not something you're going to pick up in a store.

There was a product out there from Abit or Asus I think that was going to plug into the PC ExpressCard54 slot and let you use desktop video cards with a laptop - the ExpressCard54 interface is actually PCI-E X16.

EDIT: Here it is: http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=5369

To my knowledge it's not actually out yet.
