Do hotels really check how many kids you have?

I'm looking at making reservations for Disneyland for 2 adults and 4 kids (aged 4 months to 9 years).

Some of the travel websites won't even let me do a search with more than 4 guests total.
Expedia lets me, but comes up with rates for "family suites" at a lot of the hotels that cost $100 a night and more.
A regular room with two double beds would be fine for us and if I put in 2 adults and 2 kids in my search, I can find places right next to disneyland for $50-$60 a night.

Do most hotels/motels really care or check to make sure I only have 2 kids?

I've never had a hotel or a motel actually check. You get a room, say two people are sleeping in it, get your key, and bring back as many people as you like.

Baby doesn't count as "people". Don't remember the cutoff age, 2? 4?

Expedia asks for the ages of each kid. They are <1, 4, 6, 9.
But I don't know how they figure which rooms you are eligible for.
It seems to vary by hotel because I did get a few listings come up that were for rooms with two double beds, but the hotels I really wanted (the ones right next to the Disneyland entrance) showed "exceeded max children" for their two double bed room rates.

Most don't care. Only place I know of where per person count is important is in LV at Mandalay Bay if you wish to swim. Everyone must show a key pass to get into the pool complex. Even kids. None of that, "I'm with them" kind of thing. No entry for that.
