Al Sharpton can use the "N-word" all he wants to. I cannot use it in any context without offending him, even if I didn't mean harm by it.

However, he does not have any problems calling me a "cracker", even in a mean spirited way. Being called a cracker by Al Sharpton does not offend me because

Al Sharpton has no moral authority and his words are meaningless.

I guess that is a double standard. But getting back to the 'queer' word, there isn't really an equivalent abusive used by gay people to describe heterosexuals. (Sometimes gay people refer to heterosexuals as "breeders", but it's not usually done in a mean spirited way, and it's a pretty mild insult, in my own opinion, compared to f@g, f@ggot, queer, pansy, etc.)

They use the word all the time to describe themselves, but an "outsider" using the word is offensive to them, regardless of the context or intentions of the user.
from the dictionary:
queer

adj. queer·er, queer·est

1. Deviating from the expected or normal; strange: a queer situation.
2. Odd or unconventional, as in behavior; eccentric. See Synonyms at strange.
3. Of a questionable nature or character; suspicious.
4. Slang. Fake; counterfeit.
5. Feeling slightly ill; queasy.
6. Offensive Slang. Homosexual.
7. Usage Problem. Of or relating to lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, or transgendered people.

n.

1. Offensive Slang. Used as a disparaging term for a homosexual person.
2. Usage Problem. A lesbian, gay male, bisexual, or transgendered person.

So it is has many shades of meaning . . . hollered from a car at a gay person is an insult; applied to themselves as deviating from the expected or normal or unconventional is not

I think it's more to do with commom courtesy. It's just not polite to refer to black people as 'n1ggers'.
It's also not good for ones health.
