Do heatspreaders on ram actually do anything?

So its not worth the extra $5 per stick for the Geil w/HS over the Mushkin? 🙂

How is that being cheap? I wanna know if a heatspreader will make a difference, if it dosent, why would i go for it then?

I'm pretty sure they don't really help. maybe, they would help a tiny bit if you were running pc3200 @ pc4000 speeds or something, but otherwise completely unnecessary. Cool looking though. 🙂

People who don't overclock and waste $$ on heatspreaders are like the v-tech rice rocketeers.

The real issue is heat. Does the heat spreaders really help keep things cool? Well sure it does, it?s suppose to. But without dissipation fins, performance can only go so far. In my test I notice a 0.8C to 1.7C drop using an electronic thermostat. Considering that there are only 4 chips per side on the module, the heat spreaders actually work quite well. If there were more, the size ration between the number of chips and the size of the spreader decreases, and performance also decreases.

If you're 0.8-1.7C from overheating your memory, the heatspreaders WILL make the difference 😛
