Do headphone Amp's make a difference?

I think this is a question for headfi.org 🙂

I think it depends a lot on what headphones you have for what kind of difference it makes.

Westone UM2's

Depends on the course, the headphones you use, the music you listen to and the listening level you like.
If you like it loud n mad, get an amp.

I think there is a noticeable increase in sound quality/clarity with a headphone amp. I'm using a relatively inexpensive amp (Behringer HA4700...I think I paid $100) but it makes all of my headphones sound better, even the cheap ones.

a little while ago I helped a buddy of mine get a very nice headphone setup. using his HD-600s, it was night and day adding in an xp-7 over the headphone amp in my RME Hammerfall multiface. never has $1000 hardware sounded so inadequate 🙁

the xp-7 is one hell of an amp paired with sennheiser phones.

Yes big time.
I've never even used a headphone amp before either. But when I hooked my HD-497s up to my neighbor's McIntonish receiver, it sounded LEAPS and BOUNDS better.
I could only imagine that a dedicated headphone amp would be EVEN BETTER.

if you have high impedance headphones, its probably mandatory to get one. sound cards do not have the proper current output to power high ohm loads correctly. amps cost alot because well, its not exactly easy to amplify a signal 1:1

bottom line: its a good idea to get an amp if your cans cost more than $50. basic cmoy's start at $20.

I heard that UM2's were designed to be easily driven. The use of an amp would make a difference in SQ of course, but the point was ultimate portability. A good DAP and a pair of UM2's are very hard to be beaten by any other set of IEM's in the same price range (or even a little higher) without the aid of an amp.

YES YES YES

but not the really expensive ones unless you have a $1000 CD player or DAC converter to go with it.

Headroom makes a lot of good ones. It makes a huge difference, especially with regards to BASS.

Get one of the smaller ones from ww.headroom.com

they are like $150 and make a world of difference with any headphones costing more than $50. if you have expensive headphones you might want to opt for one in the $300-$600 range.

contact "x86 inside" on aim, he can build you one. 😉

For 20 bucks?
I can build one myself if i really wante done, I just lack sufficient motivation. 😱

Which is a bit of a bind for me, I'm too lazy to build me own and too cheap to spend 50 or 100 bucks.

But, heres to being a lazy tight ass

20 bucks is self build. getting someone else to build u one is much more. and if pay that much u pay a lot for your headphones too😛

I actually bought one for $35 pre built.

I've got the instructions on how to build on as well... Gonna take apart the prebuilt one and put it back togeather the way i want for the first build. Then i'll try buildingfrom scratch myself 🙂
