I have an old 25" TV I was going to sell and one day replace with a hdtv.

however the hdtv would need to work with just regular cable like the old crt did. do they all do this or do you have to use a digital cable box?

Most do, but not all. I have an older plasma that doesn't have any tuner at all. But nowadays, it's not that common to find one without at least an SD tuner (like your old tv). It's better when they also have an hd tuner built in as well, then you can get hd over the airways or through cable (unscrambled channels)

By FCC rules, you can't import TVs without ATSC tuners any more. And if it doesn't have a tuner, it's a monitor, not a TV. :)

You have to look at the TV. All TV's made now have ATSC tuners in them, but they don't all have NTSC tuners.

ATSC = digital & analog
NTSC = Analog only

Some people say that having the NTSC tuner along with an ATSC tuner is beneficial since it does a better job producing an analog picture. I wear glasses/contacts so I don't buy into all the extra junk that makes TV's look nicer. (i.e. 1080p on a 37" LCD is a waste for me).
