My friend was at compusa looking at the maxtor 160 gig hd that was on sale. The salesman told him that it came with a free ata 133 controller card. HE said that you can not use hard drives over 120 gig without the card that comes with it. Is he right? My friend is running windows xp.

Thanks for any help.

Depends on a number of factors. The simplest answer is yes, and it is recommended you use the controller for the easiest setup.

The other short answer is no. First... the maximum for some motherboards is 137 gigs and that can usually be overcome by a bios flash to update it and allow it to have more than that.
