Do HD's heat up to the point hot-to-touch...?

Hi. Went over to my friend's place b/c she 😉 was having a problem with her computer... Took a look at it, and aside from running WinME & running cr@p load of unnecessary background programs, it was okay, but the computer was constantly locking up...

Took the side panel off and touched the HD & it was HOT!! I mean, if I had left my fingers on it for little more, I would've gotten burned... I'm figuring this is the main culprit... Do HD's get this hot..? I alway use active cooling on mine, so I can't really tell, but it seems ridiculous that HD gets this hot... If not, what would be the cause for this...?

Her computer was built by her little brother (who's away currently) and it is not oc'd. As far as I can tell, these are the specs when I briefly looked it over...

PIII 500 Katmai
Abit BE6 (it had Soft Menu II or III in the bios with HPT controller)
Viper TNT Ultra
SB Live Value, etc..
in one of those translucent color cases...

Should I swap out the HD or should I just put some fans into it... As far as I can see, I didn't see any fans installed, but usually PIII systems (specially non-oc'd systems) didn't really need any...

Any thoughts? I'd really appreciate any help, guys. I want to get thanked by her... 😀😀😀 j/k.. 😉 Thanks again!

Is it right next to a chunk of metal? I know when I had two drives running raid they were both right next to each other and they were getting way too hot.

Of course, I'm no the one to ask because I'm running my HD in a SilentDrive right now 😀

Yes they get real hot & yes putting a case fan at the front bottom to draw cool air in would be a very good ideal.

yup, some HDs can get rather hot. Had a seagate once that heated up so badly that you couldn't handle it until after 5 mins for it to cool down.

<< and touched the HD & it was HOT!! I mean, if I had left my fingers on it for little more, I would've gotten burned.. >>

Makes me cring just thinking about that!

Thanks guys... Yeah, she has 2 HD's set up in the HD rack... I guess I'll slap in some fans in there and see if that'll help. Thanks! 🙂

Aluminum can feel much hotter than steel at the same temperature because it conducts heat about 10 times as well. It's common for the aluminum casting of a drive to reach 50-55C. A fan should cool this by 5C, natural convection (vertical mounting) by 3C. It's more important to keep the chips cool because some run at 60-70C, and convection alone can make them 10-20C cooler.
