do HD DVD or Blu Ray players play Divx/Xvid?

No. No standalone players support divx/xvid. You can get a cheap philips dvd player if you want to watch divx/xvid movies.
 
Though DivX and XviD are MPEG4, both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray support a different implementation... a different "profile" that is optimized for high-definition 1080p vs. optimized for maximum compression of DVD-quality video.
