Do Hard Drive make sound when PC wont post?

does the hard drive make sound when computer is not posting?

my computer wont post. it just power on but wont post.

it was on a hot day. i notice the computer makes loud noise and the heat on the computer is hot. i turn it off for 7 hours and turn it on.... it wont boot! only power up but no post. keyboard light is on and everything but no post.

before this, days before...... when i power up and it wont power up right away, it took like 15 seconds before it boot. i was like what? nothing happpend... blank screen and then 15 seconds later it boot. everything works normal. then days later the computer wont boot at all after shutting it down for cool down.

gotta be over heat.... mobo over heat?

one thing i want to know is does the hard drive make sound when computer wont post? because it might be the hard drive. i dont hear any sound from the hard drive.

i tried:
- reseat the cpu and renew the thermal paste
- took jumper pin from the mobo out and in again
- replaced psu

still wont post.

in the scenario if the mobo is messed up, can i upgrade the computer by replacing a new mobo with upgraded ram capacity slots and new cpu? since replacing a new mobo anyway.

- is all cpu plug and play? or must download software and stuff to be able to work?

never install new mobo before. what brand of mobo is good?

That is a lot of information and a lot of questions.

A HD will generally not keep a computer from booting. You can simply unplug the HD and boot from any bootable CD/DVD to test this aspect.

Do you have an optical drive and a bootable disk?

i have optical drive yes and i forgot to say that the disc drive works. i can eject it off and on. i also replaced a new psu. but the computer still wont post.

how do i exactly test hard drive? bootable disk? whats that? any picture?

EDITED in light of new information.

Don't worry about testing the HD just yet. Do you have a Windows disk? Windows disks are bootable.

If the computer runs from the optical and not from the HD odds are the HD is shot.

Booting from the optical might involve setting the BIOS to boot from the optical or it might already be set up that way...

windows disk? os disc? no i dont. it doesnt come with it. only tells in a piece of paper that is a shape of a cd.

huh? no way!

how do i certainly know if it is running from optical? optical is the disc tray right?

puppy linux is like unbuntu right? i have used live unbunto disc before.

so i can just slip in unbunto live disc to test the computer? how do i boot it from it when the computer wont post?

If you unplug your HD and boot from optical you will know you are "running from optical" because there is no other choice.

What kind of computer is it?

acer. i have several computer have same problem. wont boot. sit on shelve collect dust. no resolve. cant fix. now new computer wont boot too. need to fix it.

i really think it is the mobo since i rarely turn the computer off.

Because of the way you asked the questions I assumed you meant boot when you said POST. If the MB really does not post you most likely have a bad MB.

oh. so if i unbplug the hard drive will it auto boot from the disc? or i must hit the f12 or whever and tell it to boot from the disc?

and what is the side effect if i unplug the hard drive? say if the hard drive is working fine, and if it is unplugged, next time i must reconfigure the hard drive again and reformat everything? or is the hard drive plug and play?

i dont want to mess up other stuff as i try to fix this.

and wait..... how do i boot it via unbunto disc if the computer wont post. will it still do it automatically if i slip in the unbuntop disc on the disc tray?

yes the computer wont post. as in it wont boot. it power up but theres nothing on the monitor screen. no beep no nothing. cpu fan is running and everything.... disc drive tray can be eject in and out but no nothing on the screen.

MB are not generally plug and play.

You will need the correct type of MB for your CPU.

Your Window's licence is tied to the MB so you might need to contact MS to get Windows running on the new MB.

A reload from scratch (including drivers) is advised unless you get the exact same MB you had before.

If you don't have a proper Windows disk and instead have a restore disk this could be an issue. The restore disk will assume the hardware that came with the system.

ACER is terrible about such things and you may have no disk at all...

Booting, the display and POSTing are not all the same thing. POSTing is early in the process and stands for Power On Self Test. A boot means to get the OS fully running, be it from the HD or optical. You might have bad video or monitor? For example a computer could boot and be running but nothing would show up on the display? Do you have another computer to test components with?

To answer your primary question, yes, the HDD should at least "spin up" when power is applied to the PC and its components, regardless of whether or not the CPU can complete the BIOS POST or not.

no! damn is this mean its really the hard drive?

the computer power up with lights and fan and everything but just no beep nor screen comes up. this is what they call pc not post right?

as i touch the hard drive i feel nothing from the hard drive like no spin nor sound no vibration while the computer is power up. i left the computer on for days and see if it ever post but still dont. i can feel tiny heat on the hard drive though but nothing else like the hard drive dont spin.

the hard drive supose to have high heat when the computer is on for weeks right? but it feel very little heat like almost not noticible.

heres an important question:

what does this mean? or more likely mean?

- before problem started, power up computer and there is no beep no screen for 15 seconds then computer comes up itself and everything is normal.

what problem is this likely? hard drive? over heat mobo?

Unplug the power and data cable from the hard drive and see if it gives you the POST screen.

in the scenario if the hard drive is fine, once unplug sata cable from the hard drive....... will the hard drive need to be reconfigured? or is the hard drive plug and play?

please respond. really want to try it out and unplug the sata cable and see if it beeps.

Nothing...no data, will be lost from the drive if you unplug it.
