Do Half Life 2 and Doom 3 have new game engines?

Yes, they are *NEW* engines. have you been living under a rock? 😛

I do believe HL2 is a brand spankin new engine.

As for DOOM or Unreal engines. They might quite a bit of older code, but its still practically new.

Unreal 2 is a modified version of the new Unreal Warfare engine (IIRC), which has been used for UT2k3, U2 and Unreal Championship. DX7 IIRC, and totally new.
Doom 3 is an OpenGL based new engine, probably going to be used for lots of other games in the future.
Half Life 2 is a totally new, very DX9 engine with pretty much all the DX9 features in (hence why nVidia cards aren't so hot with it)

The Unreal/UT/Deus Ex engine wasn't used for UT2k3, Unreal 2 or DE2, they made a new engine, AFAIK.
I think also the Q3 engine was either new or very different to the Q2 engine.
Q3 engine was used for JK2/Voyager: Elite Force, Q3
Q2 engine was used for HL and Q2.

Yea new engines as everybdy else has said, BUT it looks like the HL2 one will run WAY better on a ATI card (9500 or higher). Read anandtech's front page and some other sites.

So if other games use the same engine, Nivida is in trouble for now.

Are they finally writing a new engine for these games or is it jut more modified QII, Unreal, etc, engines?
Christ you are dense.

Actually HL was a heavily modified Q1 engine...this was discussed a while ago on this forum. If you look at the release dates you can see this pretty clearly. With 3+ years of dev time there's no way they could've had the released q2 engine.

Does it really matter?
Whether it's all new code written from scratch or makes use of some of the old code, it is still a large improvement.

yeah, a LOT of people screw this up. HL was based on Q1

No one writes code completely from scratch. I'm sure there's still pieces of Quake1 engine code in Doom3. But when people say a new engine its considered a big deal because it usually raises the bar and kills everyone's "high powered" system.

HL2 is going to bring everyone's system to its knees. The top of the line cards barely break 60 fps even at 1024x768.

Makes me glad I didn't get an LCD monitor with a native res higher than 1024.

Danke.

So uhh....what are the odds Duke Nukem Forever will be switched over to one of the new engines 🙂

Nope, they're going to recycle the code from Wolfenstein 3D for Doom III. Carmack wanted to make it accessible to everyone, even the guy who still owns a 386. 😉
