Do Gmail calls work in Japan?

I can't find a definitive answer online. If I sign into gmail from Japan, will I be able to make calls inside gmail (using my google voice number) normally?

If anybody lives in Japan, can you provide a quick answer? Thanks.

Pretty sure my dad calls my cell over GoogleVoice and he's in Japan.

Hmm, that's interesting. I'm in China right now and I don't think I can make calls in Gmail. The "Call Phone" feature is simply not there. I'll see what I get when I'm in Japan. It would be VERY helpful if I can place calls in Gmail in Japan.

This has just started working (free call to the US through GMail chat) all around the world starting early this year. Not everyone can do it yet, but it (the 'call phone' feature) has started popping up to some people logging in not in the US.

I confirm it works in Japan. It does NOT work in China (Call phone icon doesn't show up).

never had to use gmail calls before. but skype works fine in japan, if that helps at all
