As long as I've been alive they've been called that, unofficially of course. You bring up a good point though, women look way better in them than guys do, damned if I can figure out why. Same goes for boxers, a decently hot woman in a pair of boxers I just can't resist.

It is horribly tacky and unractive for any guy to wear JUST an undershirt.

My ex loved when I wore them around the house, but to wear one out in public is just trashy/tacky.

It's more or less a tank top though they are made out of thinner material and are more form fitting, that's why they only look good on guys with athletic builds.
 
Usually it looks aweful, but if the guy has 'game' (which most don't, even if you think you do) then it could look really hot.
 
Looks like crap if someone is just wearing it and going about their life, but if someone throws one on at the beach and they are athletic then its good to go. Pasty white and overweight guys however should be banned from wearing them.

Tank top with a different sort of back, made of cotton.

I know the ones. We call it a guinea Tee.

The b/f wears them every day. Under his tee shirt.

On the right guy, they are incredibly sexy. Not as an outter shirt, though, but as an undershirt or to sleep in. I sleep in them in the summer time.

I remember, when the first Rocky movie came out... the scene where he and Adrian are alone in his apartment and he is wearing one.... every female i knew swooned at the time. Funny how times change and they are thought of so differently now. Wife Beater shirts... haha!

In my day... and even now, they are not appropriate to be worn as an outter shirt.

on my course at uni there is one guy who wears a wife beater....he is fairly buff and toned but he wears a white wife beater alot, and it just makes him come across as someone who loves himself and looks down on others.
