So supposedly everyone has an accent to everyone else. Florida sounds pretty plain.... or does it? I'm in FL myself. Do we sound funny to you people?

In the panhandle, yes. Otherwise, not that I've noticed (I'm from Maryland).

Actually, we have very specific accents depending on the region you are from. My husband and I can tell someone from Plant City right away! For example, Mel Tillis and his daughter Pam are from around there.

I have a very slight Southern accent that is blended with a very slight Spanish accent which is the result of having grown up hearing Spanish spoken in the family, but "Southern" spoken at school. I can nail either accent if I feel like it. Most Ybor City children and grandchildren have this distinct dialect, and it almost ends up sounding like no accent at all if you aren't listening for it. But then you start to pick up on the latin rhythm and the sensual drawl, and you catch on.

Anyway, the question should only apply to native Floridians... not new transplants. :p

The Florida Accent is obviously a Southern Accent (some call it the "Florida Cracker" accent) and depending on where the native-born Floridan you are talking to is from and how many generations they're family has been here will determine how it sounds. Obviously it is most noticed in the small town and rural areas all over the state. John Anderson was born and raised in Orange County Florida, great example of a true Central Florida Accent, Mel Tillis born in Tampa area....just look up some of the native-born politicians and listen to how they talk you will be surprised to hear even there are "Florida Crackers" even born in Miami like Senator Bill Nelson. Check out some native floridian accents here:

I used to think I had no accent, that people "around here" have no accent. So wrong. Everybody has an accent... EVERYBODY! You just might not be aware of it. Maybe if you lived elsewhere, where the accent is far different... for a nice long time, then if you went back you would perceive it.
