Do ferrets make good pets?

Phokus

Lifer
I saw a ferret running around in the mall i work at and i thought it looked damn cute and i think i want to get one as a pet. I have a few questions to you ferret owners though:

1) Do they ruin furniture like cats?

2) Do you have to keep them in a cage?

3) Do they make big poopy messes?

4) How often do you have to feed them?

5) Do you have to keep them on a leash when you go outside?

Do ferrets make good pets?

As far as my experience goes, there isn't such a thing as a 'good' pet. You may love them, but they always stink and create a bizillion of horrible problems. I would never consider any pets after my dog died a few months ago.

sorry to hear about your dog. 🙁
dogs are the best!!!

i hear that if you get a ferret, it's best to get at least 2 of them so they have company .. and yes, they stink horribly

Thank you. I felt really bad after it died, but now I don't feel any pain and after all the hamsters and the dog I think I'm experienced enough not to make another such mistake again.

They stink because of a set of glands which you can supposedly get removed. If you see an add for a "de-scented" ferret this is what they are refering to. I don't know if that entirely eliminates their odor however.

ah don't look at it, as a mistake... this kind of thing happens... i hate losing dogs too... (3 so far in my life) and i am only 21.
but I will always have dogs. I love them!

I had ferrets for a while but gave them away. They require a lot of attention and yes, they do stink.

1. They can ruin furniture, they tore up my carpet. But if you keep their nails cut they shouldn't be too bad.

2. You can cage them but shouldn't.

3. They do poop a hell of a lot, but unless they ate something they shouldn't have (which happens a lot) it's usually not too messy.

4. Depends on how large a dish you have. Usually I had to fill the bowl o' food I had for them once every day or two.

5. YES. Especially when you first take them outside, they are the most curious animals I've seen so they want to go everywhere and scope out everything.

Descenting will prevent them from stinking really bad (they have a defense mechanism like skunks I think), but they have a "musk" even after they have been descented which is still pretty strong.

And like someone said, it is a good idea to get at least 2 or the one could get lonely and depressed.

1) Do they ruin furniture like cats?

They have been known to dig at carpets, which can damage them. Keep their nails trimmed.

2) Do you have to keep them in a cage?

Some people don't, but if you don't have a cage for them they need to be kept in a ferretproof area. If you go with a cage, get a large one. They will need to be let out to play every day. Ferrets are not like hampsters, they need room.

3) Do they make big poopy messes?

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. Did I mention yes? The pile is small and not as smelly as dog or cat, but the volume output is large.

4) How often do you have to feed them?

Keep a bowl full. They'll eat when they're hungry.

5) Do you have to keep them on a leash when you go outside?

I would advise yes. You must also make sure they're legal in your area.

These are high maintenance animals. As for the smell, they can be descented. there are also dry powder shampoos that improve the smell. Regular bedding changing does wonders as well. Like puppies and kittens, they need to be trained not to bite.

Ferrets are theives, they keep a stash. If you are missing something, check their stash.

Ferrets do best in pairs. Single ferret households need to make sure their ferret gets a lot of attention, as the ferrets will get lonely.

Because of poor breeding, ferrets have a high rate of cancer. They live from 6-10 years on average. Be careful with distemper shots, a lot of ferrets have had bad allergic reactions to one.

My sentiments exactly except replacing dog with cat
