Do fast drives like the WD Velociraptor make a difference gaming?

I know levels loading and similar tasks are quicker, but aside from that does it make any difference?

What about desktop tasks such as working in Excel... wouldn't it only make a difference when first opening the file?

I'm wondering if a Velocirapator is worth the premium over a traditional 7200rpm drive.

AT just reviewed some new SDD alongside the VR, & other 7200 RPM drives.

Looks toward the end of the review for the real world results...

I have always felt that 10K drives are slightly snappier for loading things/installing programs, etc.

I'm sure i'll feel the same way about the VR.

Does that make it worth it?

That's a question only you can answer.

To me, if you already have a very high end system, yes, it's worth it.
If your aim is a value though, no, it's not worth it.

Faster program installs, slightly faster program boot up time and most importantly faster map loading for multiplayer games. I agree with n7, if you have a high performance system the VR is a nice complement to round out your rig, but offers a poor value.

Is getting into a server 3 seconds faster worth $300? I'm not sure it's a wise choice for the money, but a VR would offer nice performance.

For online shooters - If you can load 3 seconds faster than the other guy, you have the opportunity to kill him before he can defend himself.

Single player - Loads new areas faster

General - Start up is a bit faster, programs install/load a bit faster.

If those things are worth the price/capacity trade offs to you, then go for it. Personally, it's not to me. But that's more because current 7200 RPM offerings form Samsung, Seagate, and WD have closed a lot of the performance gap compared to the (old) Raptors and have HUGE capacity (1TB). For my use, they hit the mark better.

Even if you get into a server 3 seconds faster (which is probably a stretch with these newer drives) you will still be waiting for other people before the round starts. Now for games like WOW when you go from inside to outside I guess it will be a bit faster.

Anybody know when its coming out?

Back in the heyday of BF2 getting into the server faster was beneficial to get a airplane or tank. Thats about the only time my raptor helped me personally, and it probably didn't hurt that I had 2GB of ram when the standard was 512mb or 1GB.
