Do fan adapters work even half-assed?

I was curious because I have a swiftech MCX370 hsf but was thinking of dumping a 92mm adapter w/ 92mm panaflo fan onto it to quiet things down. The gross airflow gain over the stock fan would be about 10 cfm, from 33 for the stock fan to almost 43 with the panaflo, while dropping noise to 27 dB from 43. I was thinking even if most of that airflow is wasted on turbulence/backpressure/whatnot it should still be able to cool at about the same level with significantly less noise.

What do you all think? Good idea? No good? I've only seen one review using a fan adapter, going from a 60mm to an 80mm, with a temp increase of 2 degrees C under full load, and no increase at idle. I was hoping with the extra volume of the 92mm fan the temp increase would be almost nil (or with luck even better :) ) while still killing the noise.

I will run a little hotter with the bigger fan and adaptor as you lots more cfm to have the same results. Bigger fans don't make as much noise though even if the dba rating is close because they don't run at the higher rpm like the small fans. So if you can get a fan with close to twice the cfm it should be quiet and cool pretty good. Oh you might try one of the M or H model Panaflos.
