People everywhere look down on the USA because people focus on the bad in everything, not the good.

While the USA probably has some of the best "good" (smarts, people, athletes in many sports etc.), they also have the worst "bad" (southerners, fatties).

Compare to Canada, there isn't a large gap between our good part and bad part. So Canadians are viewed pretty highly everywhere, especially since people differentiate Quebec and the rest of Canada since Quebec isn't seen as highly usually (Celine Dion).

In the US the bad is really bad. Fat, racist, overly religious, GWB voting, WMD believing southerners weilding shotguns in their underwear holding "moran" and "God Hates Fags" signs. This is how the world views all the US when it's only a small part.

Smart people see the US for the good, most people aren't smart.

Your post doesn't make sense. You say "This is how the world views all the US when it's only a small part.".....yet you say "GWB voting". You know he was voted in twice right? They teach math and statistics up in Canada?

Not all GWB voters are bad, but that type of person I described voted for GWB. I guarantee "Get a brain Morans" guy and Westboro Baptist Church didn't vote democrat.

Same as most Southerners aren't bad, but most stereotype them a certain way.

And it's no secret GWB hurt your rep bad.

If people focused on good, US would be a shining star to everyone because it offers a lot and is so influential. But they don't, they want to look at the bad and look down on you for it.

If the US retreated from the world stage, the world would be worse off. Why? Because the world needs us. Our allies need our military, they need our money, they need us.

Hmmm I don't know about all of that, It seems more that you guys need OUR money these days :D

And I strongly disagree with the US's policy of invasion under the pretence of protecting themselves. It may be true, but did they ever stop and wonder WHY other nations wish to attack them?

Yes we need America for protection if we were invaded, but invading other countries for seemingly little reason is a poor use of your military.

And you doubt leaders are elected for wanting to invade countries?
9/11 upset millions of Americans. Upset people are generally angry and want revenge. You have the media telling you it was Islam that was responsible for 9/11. Afghanistan has Islamics! Hence, "We should invade them!"

And please do visit Australia. Just avoid Canberra and go straight to Melbourne. As a Sydney resident I can confirm our city is vastly over rated.

GWB was in office prior to 9/11. Just sayin...he wasn't elected to invade countries. What you are saying in your post regarding Afghanistan does not equal why they were invaded. I don't want to get into a discussion about it, so I'll just say what I said and leave it at that.

Of all of the places outside of the US I would like to visit, Australia is at the top by far! If only the plane tickets weren't so expensive :( Would like to go to Melbourne and do some kind of expedition tour of the country.

I am aware GWB was in office prior to 9/11 but was his re-election not down to his strong military reaction to 9/11 and the general public being in favour of showing the world they will launch an invasion against anyone who threatens them?

If I am wrong, please correct me. Why was Afghanistan invaded if not to 'kill terroists' ?
Iraq invasion was for what? (Sure as hell wasn't WMD's)

EDIT:
I could well be totally wrong in what I am saying, however there in lies the problem. This thread is about how people perceive America, whether it's based on falsehoods or not is irrelevant, it is what it is.

What is the motto written in your parliament? Dieu et mon droit.

Sometime, I gotta remind the English that they used to be a French colony in their early days ;)

We don't. Why are Americans fat stupid gun wielding christians?

It was a tongue in cheek joke of course. I gotta point out I despise the fact that HAL9000 and a majority of Euros display a condescending attitude towards Americans. I am French and I used to be that way too as it is a duty for the French to badmouth the USA.

Your views change accordingly once you see the other side.

Meh, we were all African at one point, and I bet we didn't all get along then either.

i guarantee you there's people just as dumb voting democrat.

yes i voted for GWB. were he able and running i'd vote for him again. he's been a far better president than obama has been. demonstrated 8 years of solid direction that i for the most part agree with versus 3 years of continual fuckups, backpedaling, and pandering to other countries.

In Europe, they prefer luxuries to be limited to few rather than to all. The peasants over there are brainwashed to think what they have is normal and what Americans have is overkill, and thus immoral.

erm, we have plenty of luxuries over here...

tell me one thing the common american has that I dont

To put it into even more perspective, Texas is almost twice as Germany.

Yet Germany manages to out export the entire US...

I suppose Russia must be even better than the US. To put it into perspective, Siberia is 25x the size of Texas.

lulz to you.

this is why you still watch cartoons.

....like, is fantasy?

the lack of irony, is...hilarious.

(EDIT: first part of your comment: yes, of course. second part--provokes this post. 3 years not responding...try 7, then try 5 (when we really had a depression. lulz to your lack of perspective. sad, depressing, willingness to ignore history.)

I admire US for it's technological advances, but there's lots of political and social issues I strongly disagree with. But since it's your democracy you can have it the way you like. Except for the massive toll on global resources and amount of waste produced, but since Europe also produce massive amounts of pollution (although less than US) it's just a big problem here.

One of the problems to me is stories like this:

The 400 Richest Americans Are Now Richer Than the Bottom 50 Percent Combined
http://www.good.is/post/the-400-ric...w-richer-than-the-bottom-50-percent-combined/

And then still believe that less regulation is = best society makes me makes me wonder...

wait, what is this?

someone is trying to compare Texas to Germany in terms of economy?

or in terms of size?

OH texAS! always compensating for supreme lack, of---

that is what we know them for...

and I dislike any pro-soviet ommie as much as the next guy, but...belive me--once we start letting TEXAS speak for us in the USA, we have already lost the moral battle. it is all over.

just to let you guys know: TEXAS /= USA. they want to SECEDE. let them. that's what their elected GOVERNOR wants to happen....fucking let them. who gives a shiznit. they matter piddly to a world economy. We would be better off replacing them with PR.

...not like we want to lose a star on the flag, or anything...

besides calling americans fat and stupid i don't think there is much else.

and of course a bash about how much we spend on the military, and perhaps some sh*t from chomsky about how america is behind all the evil in the world. course the europeans have rendered themselves impotent militarily so while they scream about the wrongs of the world, its not like they could do anything about it. convenient :p

Absolutely is dumb people voting democrat too.

And I'm not American and don't live under Obama's system so I won't comment on him vs. Bush in the eyes of Americans.

But in the eyes of the world GWB was bad which is why other countries look down on the US. Other countries like Obama more.

Not my opinion since I don't care either way, just stating why USA tends to be looked down on.

wow. seriously. Dude, you need to get your perspective checked.

GWB dropped US international reputation by at least 25%.

Europeans look up to the US on things that they do well and look down on the US for the things they do badly.

I would imagine that broadly the same thing happens all over the world.
