do DVDs deteriorate with time?

just tried to play "I know what you did last summer" and it doesn't work, the audio is borked. Why? There don't appear to be any scratches on the DVD. It's just been sitting in it's case for a few years.

try a different dvd player... they can deteriorate, but it takes a LONG time, like.... couple decades at least, with a lot of play.

Not necessarily that long, but I'd say it was unlikely to have happened in two years.

It's probably head alignment or the laser on your DVD player going bad.

When they start going bad, it'll show up on one particular DVD but all of your others play fine.

Try it on another player.
