Do dvd-r's self destruct?

I have a princo brand dvd-r that I tried playing two years after I burned it (early adaptor, baby) and the thing doesn't work.. No scratches, nothing.. Worked fine a year ago on the same dvd player.. Anyone have any similar experiences? I've switched to Ritek now but wonder if it's the media or the nature of DVD-r...

I've heard that...seems scary to me considering the vast majority of my burned stuff is on princo DVD-R

maybe I should try backing some of them up to Ritek.

I'm not sure if it's princo or dvd-r in general .. Anyone have 2 year old riteks to test?

I don't know about DVD-R, but I have some Princo CD-Rs - recorded last spring - which won't play anymore in my car CD player, and I have a feeling that soon they will cease to play in my home stereo systems as welll...

Maybe it's some freaking cheap plastic and/or bad manufacturing... Anyway, Princo is on my "avoid at all costs" list... and it's been there for almost one year...

That is just scary to think about. Spenind money on something, you don't expect it to break on you, but since this is reality, I guess I'm not too surprised that weird stuff happens occasionally.

my princos "self destructed" as well...i think mine died in around 4-6 months...

that's why I don't buy much media anymore..dumped way too much money on princos and generics from cdrecordable.com (out of business now, i think) that don't even work anymore.

I hope this is limited to princos! Sure, forget about movies - I backed up all of my important documents, school projects, etc. etc. to DVD-r and hope they're not screwed... I refuse to buy princos now but I hope Ritek's hold up longer,,

Alot of it has to do with humidity... if you are in a very low humidity environment, they will not last as long.

I have had Riteks for more than a year and no problems here but I have some Princo's as well so I guess I will burn them on TDK's to be on the safer side.

Cheap media (espeically DVD media) will not last long.

EDIT: The dye used is cheap and degrades quickly (in a year or two) rendering the DVD useless.

is there any way to get it to not degrade? Like any sort of protective coating? Or maybe just a different storage method? Right now mine are all in a big cd wallet.

Buy a better quality DVD blank. They dye just degrades in cheap media 'cause they use cheap dye. Nothin' you can do to stop that.
