do DVD rental places even look at the DVD's after they are returned?

I have rented 7 DVD's in the past few days and 4 have been unreadable due to fingerprints/scratches/biological and or nuclear waste. They take care of me when I tell them about it, but why not look at the dumb things after they are returned?
 
they do look to make sure its the correct dvd in the case.. but think how many dvd's theyd have to examine closely and put back on a shelf.. thats A LOT. I normally get credits for those problems though. otherwise i just wash the smudges off.
 
I used to work at a rental place. I made sure they were actually in the case and that was it. I didn't have time to play every single disk in the player after it was returned to make sure there were no glitches.
