Do DRM in games ever cause DVDs to be not recognized?

Hi guys,

first off, this thread is not meant to be a rant/flame about DRM.

I have a specific question that I'd like to ask. I've heard mention that some games using DRM will not be recognized by certain DVD players. I've done a good amount of browsing on the Web in regards to this issue but would like to hear some confirmation from the experts. Perhaps this is the case more with older games. Does it happen? I'd really like to hear any examples of games where this was or is common. Perhaps it was/is more common for DRM in games to cause crashing?

I dont know about specific brands or models of DVD drives, but I've had a bunch of different background DRM programs running at once and suddenly access to my Disc drive will be cut off.
When I installed Dark Messiah of Might & Magic I had that problem. I think it used a new version of SecuRom at the time and that, combined with two other types of disc checkers from other games, ended up screwing my system to shit.

I was not happy. And I have not played the game since uninstalling it and using 3 special programs to get all that crap cleaned off my computer.
FUCK DRM. Fuck it in the ass. Like a bitch. In prison.

For reference, the other games I think contributed to this problem were Neverwinter Nights 2, the Witcher, Supreme Commander, Test Drive Unlimited, and Tiger Woods PGA 2007.
All games made or published by the giant assholes of PC gaming. I only play SupCom and TDU nowadays. My system has no issues currently. God knows what will happen with the next generation of games. I may not even play some of this years new releases if I find out they have invasive DRM.

drm, even the basic disc check, has for many eyars caused those types of problems. I have a entire line of games on CD I can't play as the drm on them check for more than 1 non-hard drive drive.

First off, welcome to the Forums :)

Yeah, there are a few games that I've heard of that have that problem.

One of the more notable was Spore. There was a certain manufacturers DVD Drive (Mat* something) that wouldn't work.
EA had to come out with some special patch to get it working.

As far as legacy stuff, yeah, I've got a problem with my Settlers III disk.
It'll install fine, but whenever you tried to play all you would get was "CD not found" :(

On Disk DRM just sucks and causes problems.
Give me a CD/DVD key, or even have me lookup a keyword in the Manual - I'll buy off on that.
On Disk DRM = No purchase to me due to past experience.

I seem to remember occasional problems with KOTOR 1 also. Sometimes I would even get an error that no disk was in the drive just when starting up the computer and not trying to play the game.
