I fail to see the purpose of a private undergrad college unless:

a) It's an ivy league school/top 20 school..even then there are many public schools that offer comparable educations.
b) You get a full/big scholarship that makes its cost equivalent or less than a public one.
c) Your parents' last name is Gates and reside in Redmond, WA.

Otherwise, what's the logic of graduating with loans several times that of a public school graduate?

Private colleges that aren't top 20 either:

A) Cater to a very specific demographic of students with very specific interests
B) For the dumb kids who can't get into their state school but has money to throw around
C) A little bit of both

I went to a top 20 which gave me money that made it cheaper than attending a public school I was thinking about. However, I certainly don't think that private schools out of the top 20 aren't worth it.

I'm at the largest public university in Michigan. When deciding on colleges, my view was this (I got into two good private schools too, one of which was an Ivy):

You can always make a huge state school into a smaller community for yourself, but it's hard to make a tiny private school into a huge learning institution.

Public-ish private.

Although the University is privately chartered by the Commonwealth, it was from the outset considered an ?instrumentality of the state,? that is, it carries out many of the functions of a public institution and promotes the general welfare of the citizenry.
Whateverthefsck that means.

Penn State, by the way.

private... I tried a public university for a while, and the classes here HUGE and taught by TAs.. I trasnferred to a private school, and every class was small and taught by profs. IMO, no comparison between the quality of education between the two. Private > public.

Private college for me. I had a full tuition scholarship + a Pell Grant of $2000 a year.
