Hell yes they existed. County fairs, school carnivals, all sorts of events had "kissing booths" to raise money.

Not so common since about the 70's though with the proliferation of STD's beyond the clap/syphilis. Once herpes and AIDS became "commonplace," the kissing booths went the way of the horse-drawn buggy...

That seems inaccurate to me. My perception of a geek is someone who is unusually focused on a particular subject. They may not necessarily be particularly intellectual. They may not be conversant on any but their chosen subject. Nerds are the smart ones, geeks are the obsessed ones. Does anyone else see this distinction?

We had kissing booths at Carnival Day at our elementary school back in the late 70's. Although at the time most people preferred participating in things more exciting, like shaving of the balloons. A small helium filled balloon would be covered with shaving cream and you had to see if you could shave of the shaving cream with a razor blade without popping the balloon. The winner got a prize.
