Do computer parts come with all cables needed?

OEM parts almost never come with cables, and more and more retail versions are w/o cables as vendors seek to shave costs due to small margins and tough competition. Specifically, there is no one answer - you have to look at each item you want to buy.

crap, i still don't know much 🙁 can anyone tell me exactly what kind of parts need cables? I know the HDD and floppy connect to the mobo but what else?
Any additional cables I might need?

Been a while since I built, but don't retail MBs usually supply 2x IDE (one 40 & one 80) and a floppy cable? I've never seen a drive, OEM or retail, come with any cable other than the CD cable for optical drives... which is no longer even needed for modern PCs. If you're buying a retail motherboard, I wouldn't worry about it.

Even after all the research I did to know about pc parts, now I'm starting to wonder whether I'll be able to build a functional PC. It's cheaper, and I can have everything I want, but is it hard to build PC's? I'm pretty good at complicated wire tangles, but when it gets to really technical stuff I can get lost...

OK - the case comes with all the cable links necessary to connect to the mother board for on/off, LEDs, etc. The power supply comes with all the power cables and connectors. The retail motherboard usually comes with two IDE ribbons and a floppy ribbon. If the monitor comes with a cable, that will let you build a complete system.

Putting a PC together is a fairly straightforward and fun learning experience, and if you run into any problems the forum members here are very helpful. Again, as long as you're buying a retail motherboard (ie. not OEM, not refurbished, not used), I wouldn't worry about the cables. Check out mechBgon's guide on building if you haven't already, it's very helpful.

thanks, im the kind of person who gets excited about stuff, and then worries about if it will all work out, etc. If I have trouble ill just post here, hoping to have fun building a PC 🙂

My retail mobo only came with a floppy cable and one master/slave IDE cable, I picked up a second ide cable for my HDD.

Many retail packaged mobos (motherboards) come with one floppy cable, one IDE cable and if the mobo has a SATA controller too it may have one SATA data cable and perhaps one SATA power adapter. The higher end boards often give you more cables like two IDE, two SATA and two power adapters. Newegg's picture galleries (and the mfr's web site) of mobos usually show/tell clearly what's in the box. . If you don't have one now and are getting a new printer too, you'll also need a cable for that. USB cables can be had for $2.00 (bgmicro, etc.) and parallel for less than $8. (and I'm talking 10 footers here not six!)

mechBgon's system building guide should be on your "must read" list: http://www.omnicast.net/~tmcfadden

I recently built a new rig around a Chaintech VNF4 Ultra and it came with
2x IDE (40 pin and 80 pin)
2x SATA
1x floppy

What kind of system are you building? If anything, you might need molex to SATA adapters for any SATA drives if you are using an 'old' power supply.

And if you are doing with DVI video card/monitor, then you need to buy a DVI cable (unless your monitor comes with one). Most video cards will not come with a DVI cable either.

My soltek board came with:
1x rounded 80pin IDE
2x flat IDE (40 pin and 80 pin)
1x floppy
4x SATA
2x Sata power cables

Whatever you do DO NOT BUY them from COMPUSA or BEST BUY. Ugghh.

They charge and arm and a leg for them.

They should only cost about a buck or so. I would think compgeeks would be a good place to go for any cables you need.

Most motherboards come with a set and some hard drives come with a cable but not all the time.

Retail motherboards come with cables. For the most part retail computer parts come with the needed cables for those items. Were you do not get cables are from OEM or refurb computer parts.

One cable that is always needed but never included is a printer cable. Keep that in mind when adding a printer; you will never get a cable with any printer.

Most retail mobos (such as mine) come with a master/slave rounded IDE cable, and a rounded floppy cable. A rounded IDE cable is very sexy, they shove the ribbon into a thin plastic tube. You can buy extras at www.svc.com, which is where I bought mine.
