I have been asked for GPA quite a few times during the interview, do they check for "official" transcript later on?

I have previously been asked to provide a copy of my transcript after applying for a job.

My work didn't care about my transcripts at all because I managed to get enough experience through my part time job and freelance work that I did while I was in school. They were pretty interested in a lot of the projects that I did in class though.

the bigger the company the more likely it will be checked. they just run them through another services company to make sure you aren't BSing.

If they ask for it, somebody is probably going to look at it. But how large a factor it is in the selection process is questionable. Usually they just need the transcript to see if you meet the minimum requirements, rather than as a determining factor.

There seems to be no pattern about which employer checks and which does not.

I've been on interviews where I had to provide hard copy for everything I had on my resume.

Even CEO's and top government officials have been busted for having faked degrees.

How are they going to check your GPA?

Usually as part of the application process, they make you sign a form allowing them to run a background check, pull a credit report, and request a copy of your transcript from your school.

Odds are that if they care enough to ask for your GPA, they care enough to verify it.

Yes. It matters very much.

The professional world is built upon your word and how trustworthy that word is. Don't ever freakin' lie in the professional world because it will catch up to you. Your name and your word are one and the same, tarnish one and you tarnish the other.

I lied in my profession ONCE (12 years ago). that is all it took for me to learn my lesson, and a painful one at that.

Depends on how the company's HR does it (or if they even have an HR department). Certain red flags may trigger deeper probing. Many smaller firms outsource their HR these days so even going with a small company may not make you immune.

the only proof IBM wanted was of a 4-year degree. When you interview, they request that you have at least a 3.0GPA but never verify. This was the case 6 years ago.

RadioShack CEO resigns over resume controversy

yep. don't freakin' lie on your resume or misstate anything. It doesn't matter who you are, it will catch up to you.

once you get that ding it is hard to erase unless you move way across the country.

Unless you're the CEO of Radio Shack no one will know of facade-ish ways.
