Do cheap power supplies really have much effect on Athlon systems?

I know AMD has a list of ps's for the athlon, but I was wondering if most worked with it fine anyways, or if you really should go with an amd approved power supply. Just curious.

In my experience it's hit or miss. Word to the wise, if you have all your IDE cables and slots on the motherboard filled with a drive/device, make sure you have an approved Power supply. I had an Athlon 500 with a non approved 250w which died when I upgraded to athlon 800 and added a new HD, I got a 300w Antec powersupply and everything ran fine.

Hope that helped.

The power supply does matter, but it's hard to quantify since a crash caused by a power fluctuation might just appear as a Windows error of some sort. If you are planning on overclocking at all, you definitely need quality power. The price really isn't that prohibitive, and you can migrate the PS to case after case. Worth the investment in a decent one.
