My question is this, do only certain keys work for certain releases of win 2k? The reason I ask this is becuase I just bought a COA, and it looks legit, hologram and all, reads windows 2000 professional 1-2 CPUS, the product key, and then the hologram of MICROSOFT. But when I tried to install a fresh installation off my copied cd (sp1) it says invalid key... Did i get duped or is there a chance this is a legit COA and it works with a later release of Win2k?

yeah different releases of Windows will have different keys... MS seems to change their keys from time to time... was already like that with win98....

I finished the installation using the ripped off key since couldn't get he real one to work. Can I arbitrarily change the key using one of those apps or do I have to find the realease this one worked with?

A service pack should not affect the validity of the key.

Either the COA you purchased is for a different release of Windows than your CD is, or it's fake.

I used the same valid serial for 2K, SP1, SP2, and SP3.

Never had any trouble whatsoever.
