Do CDRW's need to be formatted before using?

If so, what program is used to format them? I have directCD but I thought that format was only so that you could use the drag and drop burning feature.

You only need to do the formatting if you want to use it like a floppy.

You don't need to format it if you use it like a standard CDR, and then erase at the end.
 
also remember that if you format the cdrw then you'll end up with around 550Mb of space vs 650Mb if left unformatted! 🙂
