Do cat's suddenly become softer when they get scared?

Is this true/possible? Do cats/some cats become softer when they are scared? For some reason my cat seems to be very soft at times and wonder if it was because he was scared. Sometime he will be running around the house and then come upto you all spiked, walking sideways with a wierd look and then just dart out. I would then chase him and after a while pet him, then he would be extremely soft. Any corelation between being scared and softness?
 
I know exactly what you're talking about. I guess the softness is just the cat trying to reconcile with the master... but who knows, maybe he/she's just tyring to get close enough to your throat 😛

Actually, when they're scared they try to become as "big" as possible. That's why all their hair stands up and they arch their back.
 
Why is everyone being so mean? This seems to me like a legitmate question and not some YAGT from poor Skywalker66 or a post 'n run troll by Riprorin.
