do/can WMA files use ID3 tags or do they have to already be in the parent MP3s?

i convert my MP3s into WMA so more will fit on my Nomad II, but the parent MP3s do not have ID3 tags, and i want the WMA files to have them so i can easily read my player's screen. any ideas?
