I have been wondering about this for a whille. do ca have state police, some people told me that chp are state police but i was under immopression that chp only have juristiction over highways/freeways and la county, am i wrong?

Since this thread has filled it's purpose I'm going to use it to rant rather than starting my own thread and wasting that space.

CHP are SOOO much better than Washington state's police. I've lived in Cali almost all my life, always treated the police/CHP with respect, admitted I was speeding when I got a ticket, did what they asked, etc, never was treated badly and I have the utmost liking and respect for them.

Then I moved to Washington. I've been hassled by police six or seven times since I moved (within four months). What for? Sitting in my car reading! Twice in the same location, granted, and four or five times in other locations that I tried to avoid getting into trouble. Places like the parking lot of a park that closes at dusk (the cop and I had a nice little conversation in September about whether 7:00 and still mostly light is dusk or not; he let me go and warned me he'd arrest me if he caught me "trespassing" again).

One time out of those 6 or 7 I've been treated politely, and that was when (coincidentally) I was dressed quite nicely because I'd been to church earlier. Other locations besides the park were such innocuous places as the wide open parking lot of the community college, the parking lot of the city library, and sitting on the side of a residential street.

I'm FRICKING READING! Do I LOOK dangerous? (110 lb decently-groomed female in a locked car with a book and a blanket, nothing to indicate I'm dealing drugs or homeless.) The semi-rude and threat-filled manner in which I've been treated each time irritates the heck out of me. I guess I learned my lesson though. I don't sit and read in my car any time after 4:00, if at all, anymore.

I miss the CHP.

Cliff notes: WA state cops suck.

Generally speaking State police agencies are primarily Highway Patrol. Of course there are exceptions (ex: Texas Rangers, State Drug Task forces, etc.).

Yes, state police have jurisdiction over the entire state. County has jurisdiction within their county, and city within city.

Therefore, when cases cross outside a city, county will step in. When they cross county lines, the state may step in (especially when they have agencies other than the HP). Finally, when they cross state lines, federal agencies step in.

Of course, since the "upper" agencies have wider jurisdiction they may step in at other points, but it may depend on who can "handle" the case. Local->County->State->Fed.

Seriosuly I get hassled all the time, i hate cops up here especially!

Why doesn't CA have car inspection laws ? It's running rampant with vehicles everywhere on every highway causing traffic jams and there's no inspection law ?

if i would have to speculate i would say because alot of cars woudn't pass the test forcing alot of people in to using public transportation which this state don't have enough of even with having no inspection laws.

CHP have jurisdiction everywhere, i believe. but they don't patrol areas other than highways/freeways and other non-incorporated areas. As an example, I havea friend who lives just outside the city limits (still in suburbia) on the far side of the city from the freeway, but CHP patrols those neighborhoods along with the County Sheriff Department.

I was wondering the same thing

Cliff notes: WA state cops suck.

I find this interesting, I grew up in SoCal and had numerous encounters (Traffic infractions) with LA police, I felt fortunate to get out of California alive. I have lived in Washington for 30 years now and find the Police, especially the WSP to be a whole different breed, generally professional and courteous, unlike California officers.
