Do Audigy SE soundcards run from hardware or software?

Generally, on-board audio is sufficient for most uses. However, Audigy 4 or X-Fi will still give a better sound quality improvement over on-board. This of course depends a lot on the quality of motherboard you have.

As some have mentioned already, the gain in FPS in video is minimal or next to none.
