Do Atheros Mini PCI Wireless cards really improve performance?

At home, most likely not but I'm thinking about increasing my range with my school's network and so forth.

Not worth it? Worth it?

Atheros make a line of mini-pci cards with outrageous power, designed to go in dedicated radio enclosures with real antennas. Some folks put them into laptops, even though it is a bad idea, according to atheros.

? Don't most of the new laptops have the Athernos card now? I just wanted to know if I would actually see any noticable difference with range compared to my current one. Especially that 2X range technology they refer to.

I'm referrring to some really high powered cards , like 800 or more mw. atheros made those for installations with proper cooling, they get overly hot in a lappy.
I don't know about the cards your talking about.

I think the Atheros and Intel are pretty equivelant. I like the ACU for configuration of a single laptop, I like the Intel Admin tool/profile .exe builders better for mass rollouts

at one time i had a 100 mw cisco 350 pcmcia card, it was a noticable difference, but my concern with those 400mw ones is how clean is the signal, i mean sure i can put a 1 watt amp on my pci linksys card, but it wont come close to the singal quality of my cisco pci 350 card with the same amp...yes i know those are old cards, and yes im aware that a 1 watt amp on a 100 mw card is scating teh edge of the legal limit for that sprectum... but i can still do it

I switched from intel 2200b/g to atheros 6002x, and let me tell you, it's a world of difference.

Finds signals that the intel never saw, signal strength is stronger, I get better speeds.

But the intels have been a hit and miss (mostly miss from what I've been reading)
