Do Apple iPods work ok in Windows and vice versa for the HP model?

I'm in the market for an iPod right now and I want to make sure I don't screw myself over by purchasing an Apple iPod. I know you can reformat the Apple iPod to work with a Windows system, but I have heard this is not as effective as simply using an HP Windows compliant iPod.

Is there really a difference in performance/usage of either version with either O/S?

There's no such thing as a Windows versus Mac iPod, only differences in iTunes, i.e, Windows and Mac versions of iTunes. The players are the same. As previously mentioned...the HP's and the Apple branded iPods are virtually the same.
