Do any other US cities have a mass transportation system as large as NYC's?

After going to Boston and seeing how bad the T actually is, it got me wondering... do any other cities have an extensive transportation system alike NYC where you can virtually get from anywhere to anywhere edit: anytime(at least in manhattan) via mass transportation, Boston was definately not like that.

well....Boston's is quite out dated, but it does take you very far until 1 AM in the morning.

Chicago is the only US city approaching the size of the NYC transit system. They both have commuter trains AND mass transit in the city. Philadelphia and Boston are probably next.

Boston has commuter rail and mass transit. They've actually expanded the commuter rail lines a lot in the past 5 years.

Having no car in LA is like having no legs. Kind of funny how the 2 biggest cities compare in mass transit.

philly's system is fairly widespread but they stop service after one am or so (at least out to the suburbs not positive about downtown)

is the only reason for them not having a subway system ... earthquakes ?

One thing that definitely peeves me is that people in CA aren't subjected to car inspections (while we pay to fix our cars repeatedly). See the cars driving around - Pimp My Ride, pre-pimped material. How can they possibly drive that on those streets legally ? Bumpers are hanging off, radiators completely exposed, mirrors hanging by a thread... doesn't sound dangerous enough ?

Anyway, my point is... because they don't have mass transit like subways, more people are allowed to drive cars even in sh!tty condition. How does that happen ?

I think the main reason is that it just costs too much to do now. It would be around a half billion dollars a mile - if you don't need to buy a lot of expensive property.

dc's system is heavily flawed imo. they should have incorporated the purple line idea from the start. bus system is also just inherently slow 🙁

All the cities have been mentioned already.

Chicago was the best transit system I've been on next to NYC.

Chicago is probably as close as you're going to get. Then maybe DC.

DC's is not as large and is run pretty much as you would expect the capitol of bureaucracy to run one.

When it was conceived, the subway system was supposed to extend from Downtown LA to the West Side (of LA, for non LA people). Anyways when they were digging the tunnels around the La Brea Tar Pits (Wilshire Miracle Mile) they hit a pocket of methane gas and it killed some workers. The project wasn't popular to begin with, and after that the digging stopped going westward and eventually tuened northwest towards North Hollywood and all the funding was cancelled.

The LA train system sucks. UCLA and Santa Monica do not have a line, the train doesn't go into LAX
