Do any of you run Windows 2000 Server or Adv Server @ home?

If you do, why do you do it and how much did it cost you to set that system up? What type of connection are you running your @HOME server off of?

How is it as a regular OS for everyday use? Are you using the applications or special things that come with .net rc2? I am able to dl it but I can't for the life of me figure out how. Also I don't have an extra box to run it on.

I don't really use it. I just use it for the Terminal Services. And use it as a VPN server.

Stability wise is it stable?

I got all the MS OSes between Win95 to Win2k Adv. Server thru some academic discount for $299 a few years back. XP wasn't out at the time. I run Win2k server at home mostly for VPN.

I have a copy of both win2k server and advanced server (I've also got the key) that I got for free through my school, neither are installed. I did appreciate them giving me win2K and winXP Pro free though :)

How the heck do you guys get in on such good school deals? At my school we still have to pay like $250.00 for a full version of Windows XP Pro.

You go to a community college, don't you? I bought Office for like $13, windows is about the same.

I thought about setting up a server as soon as we move into our new house. Ive got a buncha extra parts laying around and a copy of MS Server 2000, once again from my school. I got it as part of an MS package for $95 total (MS Office 2000, frontpage, visio, visual studio, project, Win2K Pro, and Win2K server)

anyone remember the HOT kits?

I have my server turned off at the moment. The only time I use it is when I'm taking MCSE classes (halfway done).

I get any programming tool/OS from MS for download for free from my program. (Free means no additional fees; tuition is a lot.. blah blah blah). My friend wanted to try out the MS SQL Server Enterprise Edition on a 4 cpu machine and so we installed it for a week or so. We looked it up and it turned out to be like a 20k piece of software with that many CPUs. Great deal.

hrm, pay over $1k for a MS os that is still not very reliable or... download something like FreeBSD or Gentoo linux or some other BSD or Linux distro for free, and can be much more stable.
tough decision

Isn't the reason they charge that much because they assume you'll be using it in a commercial endeavor?

I like other NOSes for their workstation management abilities. Granted, Unix has made leaps and bounds in terms of system performance, tweaking, and stability, and you'll take my bsd machines once you pry them from my cold, dead fingers, but I haven't found a good match for something like a netware directory or an MS active directory. A redundant array of NT machines is actually pretty stable as well. I think the problem is that a similarly configured nix box can support more connections.

Yeah I just downloaded Windows XP Server 2003 RC2, haven't installed it yet though because RC1 is running. It's blue screened a few times but other than that it's been pretty stable. I run it 24/7 it goes into suspend mode though.

BTW it only took like 4 or 5 days to get a email with the download link pretty fast turn around.

Got a few copies of Win2K Server laying about somewhere from work... can't register them but the keys work. Used to have a 2K server up as a file server but not any more...

Win2K AS at home here. I use it for
A) The built in IIS stuff
B) FTP server
C) Learning about HTTP server
D) Experience on all of the above
E) NTFS is more secure, related to running the FTP server (User definable permissions and folder control)

Stability is generally pretty good. Still runs the majority of my games with no problems (A few dont run, but its limited)

I would recommend it unless your an absolute gamer nut, then stick with Win98.
