Hi guys,

I know laptops have heat problems etc, but my computer was very hot yesterday. I ran it for a good 6 hours under normal conditions. To my surprise, it wasn't the battery that got hot, it was the ram compartment, just beside the battery (BTW, I charged my battery, and the battery wasn't nearly as hot as the ram).
The hot spot is located on the left hand side, where my palm rests. You can feel it to be very warm. But when I turn the laptop over to feel the underneath at that same location, it iss really hot, if long enough, could feel like burning.

It is located at area 3 of this diagram, which confirms my belief that is it the ram that's causing all this heat.

Do any of you know if ram can take extreme heat? Should I call IBM tech support and complain?

MY 8600 shows between 40-50C for ram, depending on load and cpu/graphics temp. So high temp for ram is not unusual (no real airflow in that area in most notebooks). You could try complaining to ibm and they probably would replace something but I doubt it would have any effect on temp.
 
newer laptops do have heat problems. It is a design and package problem. Powerbooks can actually burn because how hot they get.
 
Wow, are you serious? Looks like a major design flaw. Can't believe IBM put 2 of the hottest things right on top of each other w/o proper airflow/heatsinks (left palm-rest, that's where the hdd is also, right?). I liked it better when the hdd was under the touchpad like the older laptops... Can't stand having my hands warmed up all the time. At least if it were hot on the bottom I could put it on a binder or something.

The HD is actually above that ram compartment, so the HD is located on the top left of the keyboard, while the ram compartment is on the bottom left, where you rest your left wrist on.

I called the IBM Tech support guy and he gave me the address to the authorized technician.

Any of you have warm wrists? lol Honestly is it just me or is this really is a problem?

I guess i'm just being picky but hey, only 1 more month left until my warranty expires, so I better make sure now.

 
Also a question to Abhi, how were you able to measure your ram temperature?

I used a standard electronic thermometer (those u put in your mouth or behind 🙂 ) and have it touching the bottom where ram is located. It measured only 40 degrees celcius, so maybe i'm just being paranoid. However, I doubt that is a legit method of measuring the ram's temperature.
