Do any of you have a Newfoundland? Now with pics! :)

There's been a big black dog wandering around my neighborhood for a little over a week and he seems to have taken up residence outside my sisters house down the street. We're pretty sure he's a Newfoundland but I'm probably going to take him to the vet to have him checked out and make sure what breed he is... should I decide to adopt him that is. Neither myself or my sister want to see him go to the pound only to have him put to sleep. I spent some time with him yesterday and it seems like he's been someones pet before... but I think he was trained in spanish and I have no idea how to say the basic commands in spanish since I took french in school 😉
He also loves children and stays right by your side when you walk around the yard.
I live out in the country in my new mobile home (hey.. it beats $750/month for a 1 bedroom apartment. 😛) so I have plenty of room both inside and out for a dog to run around but he'd live inside and have a crate in my bedroom.
What I want to know is if any of you have a Newf and could give me any tips. I'm no stranger to cats or dogs I grew up with several of each... my sister down the street has a Rotweiller and a Lab so I've been around large dogs too... this Newf is still a puppy not more than a couple months old but he's already bigger than both of her dogs... kinda funny how big his feet are compared to the rest of him 😉
If I adopt this guy I'm already planning on buying a large crate and some form of bedding to go inside it whether that be a blanket or some kind of pad/mat, food/water bowls, brush, food, collar/leash, bathing supplies, and ofcourse some toys. My sister will probably handle the nail trimming should he need it. Anything I'm missing?

Probably one other thing I need to figure out... is it even possible to fit this big bastard in a 3000GT? lol 🙂 He'll probably be 150lbs and about 28" high at the shoulders... should I even try it or just borrow my sisters lincoln or bro in laws F150 if I need to take him to the vet or something?

<< ... is it even possible to fit this big bastard in a 3000GT? >>

If a 300lb man can fit in that car, that dog will definitely fit. And I know from experience that a 300lb man will fit in that car.😉

Does the dog have culyish fur? You said it was black with very large feet and it is quite large for being a puppy. Find out if it likes water, not just to drink but to swim in. Sounds like a Newf. They love to swim. They are a great dog. Gentle but large and great for kids. They are not violent dogs but because of their size most people are nervous around them. Other dogs will leave him alone just because of sheer size. Could make for a nice dog to protect children though. They are very loyal and are hard working dogs for water rescue.

Newfoundland is a water dog you can confirm this by his thick oily coat. They were originally bred to rescue drowning people. They are also known to be Extremely Loyal and good with children,

My boss who just past away always had newfies.
They need to be bathed a LOT if you don't want them to reak. And they need to be kept in shape.
Because of thier size, thier hearts have to work very hard so they tend to be reither short lived.
The last male Newfie he had died of a heart attack @ four years old.
They are very sweet and well tempered though.

yeah you can't get a sweeter dog and their sheer size deters most fools who might be thinking of breaking into your house

<< feed em and washem then give em a flea treatment

so what happened to the dog?

I took him home last night and gave him some food and water... neither of which he was interested in until this morning. He slept on the floor in my bedroom last night without making a sound... guess we were both tired. 😉
I've got an appointment with the vet this afternoon to find out what kind of dog he is and if he has a tatoo or microchip to see if he belongs to anyone or not. So far so good. I'm pretty sure he's got some newfie in him... not sure he's 100% tho, think he might have some lab in there too. When he stands up he's over 6ft tall so he's bigger than my sisters lab and rotweiller already.. pretty sure he's not more than a couple months old too. 😉

that totally looks like a guy in a dog suit. I never knew Newfies were that big. I thought Irish Wolfhounds and great danes were the biggest dogs.

This vs "extremely loyal" 😀

From what I've heard these are huge, exceptionally filthy dogs (due to their size and coat), but big dogs are normally the cool ones. I think they are the ones that drool all over the place.

Got back from the vet yesterday and everything checked out fine. Got his shots and heartworm test and will go back in a month for another shot. I tried to take some pics last night but he's a pretty excited dog so these are the best I could do at the time 😉
For size reference his front feet are the size of tennis balls and he's about 2ft tall at his back...

So what do you guys think he is? The vet wasn't sure... they think he's 6-12 months old... one lady said newfoundland... the other said newfoundland/lab mix. He's 61lbs now so we'll have to see how much he grows. He'll probably get really big once I get him fixed, my sisters rotweiller gained 40 lbs! :Q

Hey!

I am a Newfoundlander. Who better to give you some info?

In case, that is not a full Newfoundland dog. I would hesitate before even saying 50%. He is most certainly a mix, quite possible with some lab included! He looks like a very nice dog though. I grew up with Newfoundland dogs in my community. There were two always walking around with their owners, trying of course to keep them in shape. As Skoorb said, they do drool a lot but they were awfully nice dogs!

Good luck, do you have a name?

<< Good luck, do you have a name? >>

Yup, his name is Shadow. Fits pretty nicely since he's all black (obviously) and follows you around everywhere you go inside or out. 🙂

Newfies are great! My wife would love to have one.

She misses our St. Bernard/Rottweiler mix. He was 198lbs and an easy 24" at the shoulder. Unfortunately we had to put him down when he was 4. He developed cancer in a front knee.

Nicest dog in the world, but his size scared the sh!t out of everybody. 🙂
