Do Animals Have Souls?

from a religious perspective, saying something along the lines of "my pet cat died and went to heaven," would imply that animals had souls. if that's the case, wouldn't eating meat be morally wrong as killing the animals would involve the destruction of a living soul?

of course, if you're athiest, I guess it doesn't matter 😉

edit: third option added.

Don't believe they have souls, and voted accordingly. I don't really know what I would say to the eating meat question if I believed they did have souls, but I would probably lean toward not eating meat as a result.

Every living thing on this planet has a soul. Its part of our conscience no matter what kind of creature you are. Animals are highly intelligent and have emotions too, we need to learn and respect them more. Its sad that humans don't value animal life.

Yes, eating animals is immoral and I would recommend a non-meat diet that consists of high protein foods such as soy products and other alternatives. However, I still eat animals and consider myself hypocrite in that regard but it doesn't make it right. They're too delicious 🙁.

Our craving for meat has gotten out of control and we should urge people to think otherwise, its both unhealthy and harmful to the enviroment.

One thing I've always wondered is this:

If you take evolution to be true (which I do) then you have to agree that humans share a common ancestor with other primates. If you go back far enough, all species have a common ancestor.

If you believe in a religion where humans have souls, one of two things is true:

1. God has never interfeared with the universe since the moment of creation and therefore, if humans have souls, everything that came before humans has a soul.

2. God interfeared when humans appeared and gave them souls.

Which do you think it is?

Clearly you have a broad definition of soul.
Its part of our conscience no matter what kind of creature you are.
How can you have a conscience w/o a central nervous system. Or an idea of the concept of "the future"? You can't feel guilty for something if you don't know why one would. Animals don't have a conscience, their basic understanding of reward/pain relationships makes it appear that they do.
Animals are highly intelligent and have emotions too, we need to learn and respect them more.
Haven't been around animals much, have you? Yeah, clearly they have emotions, but they (well, most of them) are far from 'highly intelligent' -- have you seen the stupid sh!t that some animals do?

It's in our nature, we're carnivores. We don't have souls, nor do they, so don't worry about it. If you feel bad about suffering, consider the fact that they wouldn't worry about yours.
Our craving for meat has gotten out of control and we should urge people to think otherwise, its both unhealthy and harmful to the enviroment.

It has gotten out of control because...we eat animals? We have eaten them since before we figured out fire. All that has changed is that we now know how to keep more people fed, so there are more people eating more animals (ones we brought into existance anyway).

Edit: Replaced a petty personal attack with rational argument, sorry guys.

You got sharp humor SK..I been meaning to tell you that in couple threads now.🙂

Define "soul". Once you have it defined, how do you PROVE it exists and that you have one? Can you measure it? Does it have any affect on its immediate environment? If you cannot prove that it exists, then you merely assume you have one.

You either have one or you do not. Your pet either has one, or it does not. No assertation without absolute proof, no matter how firmly and assertively made, will have any affect on that. It is strictly unsupported belief.

Eating meat is NOT morally wrong, because humans are biologically designed to be omnivores. Eating meat is simply a part of nature.

i think bible define spirit and soul differently. animals don't have souls, so we can eat them. 🙂 they do have spirit
