Do Americans get double eyelid surgery like Asians do? I don't understand but asians seem to like their eyes big and round. WHy? I dunno. I wanna know if this is a pure asian thing to do. Hmmm...what famous American stars get eye surgery?

Never heard of double eyelid surgery, but I find that I prefer women with bigger, expressive eyes. It's the first thing I notice in any woman.

It's probably something common for asians. There's Laser Eye surgery that corrects vision, which a lot of Americans do. If a typical american did "double eyelid" surgery, they'd probably be stared at all day long and given comments such as the following:

"You high?"
"Do you ever wink?"
"Too much coffee this morning?"
"Something stuck up your ...?"
etc, etc

I thought asians did it to appear more westernized, I could be totally wrong. I heard it was a real fad for awhile, but has dropped off a bit. I first heard about it 10-12 years ago.

Blueoak, it's a well known fact in psychology that people tend to find bigger eyes -- well, bigger pupils at least -- more "attractive" .. Strange but true..

By Americans I am guessing that you mean non-Asian. Well, most (if not all) non-Asian people already have double-eyelids, so there is no need to get the surgery. Also, about half of the oriental people have double eyelids. I hear that Koreans have the surgery performed on their kids at birth. I think most of the people who do not have double eyelids are East Asians. Most SouthEast Asians have double eyelids naturally.

hm i thought double eyelid surgery was to create that fold at the base of your eyelid.. where women put eye makeup. some asians have it, some don't. it doesn't have anything to do with making your eyes bigger:p

iew is that first picture the same girl?

Yeah, the eye is not physically bigger, but more of it is exposed, so some people call that making the eye bigger.

Your pupils dilate when you see something you like so they can let in more light and you can see it better. they contract when you see something you don't like. This works with cards (you can, if you could see that well, tell if someone else had a good hand), or people. That's why big pupils are attractive.

1. It makes them look less asian, and more white, which is what mass media tells the world is pretty.
2. Anime.

some people say this, but it does not make sense. Blacks, Hispanics, Latin Americans, Italians, Indians, and most other people have double eyelids, so it is not a white thing. Also, half of the Asian people have natural double eyelids. The people who get the surgery done do it because they think it makes them look better, but I doubt that it is to look white (most of these people probably have not seen a white person in their life).

OKAY YOU GUYS. Time to bring some medical sanity to this discussion.

The procedure you're describing is called a blepharoplasty. This involves tucking in the upper and/or lower eyelids to improve the cosmesis of the eyes. Generally its older people/vain people with droopy eyelids or excess orbital fat who want their eyelids taken in. Its a very common cosmetic surgery done (mainly to women).

The reason some Asians get it is because they have what are called epicanthic folds, which is essentially a thickening of the skin overlying the medial canthus of the eye (the middle portion where your tear ducts are). This gives their eyes a more hooded look as you all may have known. Having this done is not a really big deal, its just a matter of vanity. It doesn't affect one's vision to any degree.

Some 10 years ago I saw something similar that in Japan women would get some kind of cosmetic surgery to open up their eyes (prolly for those who thought there eyes were to 'slanty' and believed that bigger eyes look more attractive). I am not sure it it was the same thing as the procedure describe in the prev post.

Since the west dominates the enterntainment industry, except kung fu movies:D, it seems that more people would look at the attributes of white-skinned, blue-eyed, blonde caussian woman as desirable. For example in asia: some women would do some kind of 'chemical peel' treatment to make their skin to have a lighter tone; some would get a nose job. These cosmetic jobs are not common though.
