Do amd64's run very cool

Just done a major upgrade and got one of the new e6 stepping athlon 64's, I wasnt going to overclock it at all and got the sl120 because I thought it would be very quiet (which it is with a stealth fan on top).

Any under load at stock speeds the temperature dosnt move more than a degree or so. So just out of curiosity i thought I'd do a minor overclock.

I'm now at 2585MHz (from 2200 stock) and my temp is still well below 40 and my fan is still on the lowest setting!

Prime95 benn running for a few hours with no errors.

I'm loath to go any higher as my memory is a bit crap.

What sorth of overclocks could I expect if i get some desent ram and give it some stick?

(temps in centegrade)

First, yes, Athlon64's run very cool compared to P4's and older chips.

Second, yes the SI 120 is a great cooler.

Why do you need better ram to overclock higher? Just change the divider.

And the newer cores do seem to run fairly cool to me. In fact, for moderate overclocks I've found the stock HSF adequete.

I'm not even sure I do need beter ram.

I upgraded from a socket A motherboard with no agp lock so my overclocking experience is not so great.

I need to get some more ram anyway (I'm doing a build for my wife using the spares).

Sounds like time for more voltage then. 🙂 (if you care about achieving a higher overclock that is, if its just for fun, then increasing the voltage isn't the greatest idea)
