Do AMD Opteron processors need drivers in win XP also?

I know there are X2 dual core drivers that should be installed, but are there any drivers that should be installed if running an opteron 170 in winxp 32 bit? (not 64)

Whenever I see something like this I ALWAYS post this link (XS Link)

I think you should install both of them, but thats just me. There are people that never install them and it works fine. Just make sure instead of the X2 drivers, to get the Opteron Driveres from AMD's web site. But other than that, follow the guide.

Thanks. As soon as my 320GB HD is done formatting I will apply the driver, hotfix, and regedit. 🙂 I don't think I am going to get to finish all I wanted to tonight on this machine. :-\

Ok, now I am a bit confused. My processor driver shows up as 1.2.2.0 already. On top of that, the /usepmtimer switch is also already there in the boot.ini file. I guess I don't need to do this after all? The only thing not there from that guide is the hotfix and reg keys to enable the hotfix.

See, I don't know whether to follow that guide or not, because the driver version matches (although control panel says Athlon 64 Processor Driver, makes no mention of opteron or dual core) and the switch in the boot.ini file is already there. The only thing not installed is the hotfix and registry edits. Wizboy, should I go through this process anyway, and if so, with which drivers?

The drivers are for the use of Cool-n-Quiet...if you are not going to run this, don't load the drivers. The regedit file is for removing this feature if you decide to change your mind later on down the line.

Windows 2000 and XP will both recognize the dual processor and configure the system accordingly. You would only have to change the HAL and boot.ini file if your changing the cpu without a fresh load. Hope this helps.

so then I take it I should still perform the hotfix from microsoft?

Put me down as another poor sap who is confused by all this. I did a fresh install of WinXP w/SP2 for a system (see sig) w/a AMD X2 4200+ and then ran MS update. Do I still need to do all this or has it been done through Windows & the update(s)?

I ran cpu-id and it does show two cores, if that is of any help.

There is no need to use the hotfix from MS if you don't install the patch.

what patch? I assume you mean the registry fix.

Just as a heads up, the X2 file and opteron file's link to what appears to be the same download. I installed the opteron driver last night and it also appears as "Athlon 64 Processor Driver" in add/remove programs. Once I start gaming I will apply the hotfix & regedit if I have issues.

i had some goofy issues till i installed the dual core drivers from amds site . .

the 'pings reporting negative numbers on core 0' issue . . installed the patch and things have been smooth since.

When you say Dual Core Drivers I'm guessing you are refering to the:

AMD Athlon? 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Cool'n'Quiet Driver Version 1.50.03 Linux - AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Cool'n'Quiet Version 1.50.03 for Linux 2.6 series kernels. Provides support for AMD Cool'n'Quiet technology for Linux systems. Adds support for 2.6.10 and later kernels. Requires cpufreq-1.20, cpuspeed-1.20.1, or powersaved-0.8.19 or later to support SMP and dual-core systems.
