Do AMD APU's work easily with Windows 8?

Silly question I suppose. . .

A while ago (around late 2012) I built a desktop computer using AMD A4-5300 APU and Windows 7. The graphics never seemed to work correctly, and I could never figure it out.

I don't remember the details, but the AMD driver(s) I found/tried never worked, and Windows update never found anything - I noticed with Intel Windows Update ques the Intel graphics automatically, and they work!

Sorry, I do not remember the details. I just remember I ended up being so frustrated that I sold the APU and AMD Motherboard online and switched over to Intel. With Intel I had absolutely no trouble setting everything up. Before this I had an AM3+ Athlon set-up with Windows 7 and had no issues.

Never had an issue with AMD APUs. I have a netbook with a C-60, a microATX desktop HTPC with a LLano FM1 quad-core APU, and soon, an FM2 APU (have the mobo already, just need the chip).

Either your rig was defective, or it was PEBKAC.

Curious... Did Windows 7 or Windows 8 find AMD graphics drivers on its own?

I'm pondering building a new desktop (Intel one was stolen, and I don't like my notebook).

No, you have to go to www.amd.com and download the drivers and install them of course. If you never did that, no wonder you had problems with your graphics.

I tried the drivers on the disc, and tried finding theme at AMD's website; if only you read my first post. No reason to attack me.

I only asked, because that is my experience with Intel. Why would AMD be so different?

They're not different. You have to go to Intel to download their drivers too.

Btw, it's common knowledge not to install the drivers off of the CD/DVD, and instead, get the updated drivers from the mfg's web site. The drivers on a CD/DVD are almost always out of date.

Edit: And if you think I'm being harsh, it's only because you are trying to paint AMD as somehow problematic and difficult, when the situation is the same for AMD and Intel graphics drivers, and it seems at this point that it was clearly user error, not anything to do with AMD.

He isn't trying to paint AMD in a negative light, he just doesn't know any better. Please stop siding with corporations and using it as justification to attack new members and people who aren't as learned as others on the subject...

This is why we can't have nice things, and the reason our niche is slowly dying. How do we refill our ranks when people are attacked because of perceived slights warranted or not against nameless/faceless corporations?

Why would people want to deal with this when they can just get a console and never have to worry about a fan of a company attacking them because they don't know any better?

Eecho, I have about 7 APU's(and a lot of Intel IGP's) so enough experience and all I can say.......Intel does it automatically and for AMD............it all depends on the APU....1 will do it automatically and the other 1 will not. Then get the all in 1 driver at AMD and voila..........solved.
PS they work very well with Windows 8.

If the OP had 1000 posts under his belt, we all would have clearly said he was trolling, with the usual vague anti-AMD FUD. Since he's a newbie, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

For a very brief time I was frustrated with Windows 8 on an older AMD integrated (780G Chipset) graphics. I had to google and install Windows 7 drivers, 7/8 are basically the same OS, manufacturers don't seem to bother.

That said when it comes to and kind of drivers, it's better to go straight to the source, because windows update and motherboard manufacturers lag behind considerably when it comes to updating, linking or certifying new releases. Windows Update may be convenient, but it's not exactly up to date when it comes to hardware drivers.

Wait... what?

Console partisans are up there with '90s-era Mac/Windows fanboys.

OP: as you may have gathered already, an AMD APU should run Win 8 (Win 7 too, for that matter) just as well as an Intel CPU. If you are having difficulty getting one configured, well, "please state the nature of the medical emergency." Screenshots help.
