The couple of threads got me wondering. I haven't used one since optical mice came out a long time ago.

No, my woodgrained desk top works perfectly with my cordless optical. It's less restrictive than the limited area of a pad.

I would use my G5 directly on the desktop, which is mahogany, but even with the teflon feet it still marks up the wood after a few week s of BF2 :).

Haven't used one for ages, although I have a cheapo (Free) one in my laptop bag in case a desk is nasty.

On my trackballs, no mousepad.
On my wireless, a mousepad makes it comfortable.

My optical mice work fine on a wooden table top. I did find a use for two mousepads, though. I have both my USB external hard drives sitting vertically on them. That completely ended the slight resonance they make on the table top when on.

Yes, only for control in games. And for comfort with a little memory foam on the wrist end :)

Do now, after 4 years without thanks to new desk. Pad's already turning white from skin grinding off it:(. The glossier, nicer pads look and feel great, but the one I returned was causing too much skipping across the screen.

I used my desktop for a little while, but it was grinding the feet off of my mouse. I'm using a cloth Scooby Doo mouse pad now :)

I use an old Allsop pad. Much more precise than a wood veneer surface.

I use my laptop's trackpad because I like it better, and my mouse was bought from walmart for thirty bucks. Then again, I bet a mousepad would make it a lot better, I might just have to try that if I can find one big enough.

Yeah I like the way they feel better. Not enough resistance on just my desk top and it slides all over to fast. Plus my wrist feels much better sitting on the foam rubber mouse pad than on a hard desk.
