Do all Pentium 4 M have the same size?

Hi,

I was wondering if all the P4 M have the same size. The reason I am asking for this is because I just went to IBM service center and they were able to upgrade my laptop. However, they said that I had to buy the cpu from them since IBM laptop required smaller cpu than the regular P4 M.

Is this true or they are just telling me that to force me to buy the cpu from them?

Is it realistic that Intel have to create a smaller cpu just for IBM laptops?

Thanks in advance

PS: I am posting this thread on the laptop section also. So if you answered already on that one then ignore this one.

hi, mine is using P4-M 478 pin-400 fsb. Yes, I checked with Intel.com that they support this cpu up to 2.6. You are also right. I am using 845MP chipset board.

Mine is 2653 H5U. I believe it should be able to run at 2.6 but the main problem is that the IBM reps told me that the P4-M for IBM is different than the regular P4-M. He said it's smaller than a regular P4-M.

Is this true? And maybe you can tell me what's the max my laptop can handle.

thanks

I guess they weren't lying after all, it looks like it probably uses the small form factor 1.5v P4-M that comes in 1.6-2ghz.

Here is tthe latest bios for your model link and it says it adds support for the D1 stepping CPUs which are 800FSB evidently  It must be for one of the other models the bios works for because the supported CPU list for your's only goes upto 2ghz and that's the range on the SFF they told you about.

hi, are you saying that the cpu above the 2 ghz has different size than the one that has the 1.5v?

anyway, where do you see that it's up only to 2 ghz? I don't see it on the link that you provided.

thanks

If you look here you'll see the P4 model 80534 SFF=small form factor listed in speeds from 1.6-2ghz. Then when I searched for the P4 model 80534 one of the few hits was for the thinkpad A30/A31 but the PDF was for IBM support in Japan I believe. I honestly don't have the answer and I'm just going off of the fact that a small form factor P4 does exist, your model number thinkpad comes up for it on a Google search, and they said your's was smaller than normal P4-ms.

I found the field replacable unit parts list for the A31 2653 here and the 2653 ends at 2ghz with a particular 2ghz model that doesn't have the C1 stepping and the SFF is a b0 chip. If you are serious about this just pop the notebook open and remove the heatsink and have a look. If you are familiar with what a P4 478 CPU looks like you'll know if it's smaller.

From what I can find on the topic that is evidently the case, hence the term SFF but they are already so small you have to wonder what the smaller one looks like then :Q
