it's weird... we've got two older guys in my department (late 30's, early 40's... everyone else in the department is early/mid 20's) and they're like really into shaking hands... when I come into the office in the morning, I'm pretty ok to just grunt 'n wave to the guys who are already in, but for whatever reason, the older guys like to walk over and shake my hand.

If they knew how few young people wash their hands they might relent. Clue them in.

Also try to speak their lingo. Use terms like bitchin' and tubular.

Nothing wrong with shaking hands. It's professional. Most people appreciate a firm handshake and a lot of people will you judge you based on your handshake. SO just play along and make sure you give them a firm grip in return.

Same thing here at PD. A number of officers will come into dispatch and shake hands with everyone as they say hi. I never have minded though.

Damn..I'm old. Is that what 20 year olds really think of us in our 30's and 40's? I didn't think I was old. And to answer your question, us "Old" people shake hands because that's what gentleman do. Would you rather we slap hands and hit fists?

I guess they want to be more polite than grunting and waving at their coworkers.

I work in an office of people aged mid-20s to mid-50s, and none of those people, at any age, make it a habit to shake everyone's hand every day when they come in. In fact, after the initial "Hi, pleasure to meet you" introduction, I doubt I have shaken hands with any of them.

Saying hello when you come in is a normal thing to do. Shaking everyone's hand is not. Grunting and waving is not, in most environments.

There are plenty of contexts where a handshake is the Right Thing to do, but there are also plenty of contexts where it is a somewhat unusual thing to do.

Also for the record, I am in my 20s and don't consider 30s or 40s "old", except in the case of one of my coworkers that I make a lot of "old" jokes about. But those are, you know, jokes.

I was taught at an early age to look people in the eye and give a firm handshake when greeting. As onlyCOpunk mentioned, a lot of people judge others by their handshake. I also greet men with the salutation of "sir" and women with "ma'am" or "miss [surname]" if appropriate. Sometimes people are caught off guard or find it strange, but I think it's very important to show respect to peers and superiors alike.
